Customers and Franchisees Upbeat about Wimpy’s New Music Playlists

Wimpy Moments

Wimpy, one of the country’s leading quick service restaurant chains, is enhancing its in-restaurant dining experience by introducing great music for customers to listen to while they dine. And the popularity of the playlists has been catching on with more and more franchisees opting to install the tailored Wimpy Audio Solution as implemented by Moving Tactics, the leading South African digital signage solutions company.

Since the Wimpy Audio Solution was first piloted at Wimpy restaurants in Sandton and East Rand Mall last year, demand for this solution has been growing due to the popular feedback received by franchisees, staff and customers alike.

The new Wimpy Audio Solution saves franchisees hours of their time selecting, downloading and maintaining their music selection. “We have taken something as simple as music playing in a store and made it a dynamic and personal experience. New songs are added daily as they are released and old songs are removed on a regular basis to keep the playlists fresh and relevant at all times. We’ve produced a Top 40 hit selection combined with older classic hits for the Wimpy group so that both the young and older audiences are catered for,” says Willem van Bosch, Solutions Development Manager at Moving Tactics.

The playlists are updated twice a month so that regular diners enjoy a new musical experience each time they visit. “It has saved me a lot of time not having to select and change CDs and it’s been a relief to have the playlists created and updated for us. If any of the songs chosen don’t go down well with our customers, we can simply request that it be removed, and this is then done with immediate effect. Another benefit has been that we can control the type of music being played on-site instead of having the staff select and play their own selection of music. It is much nicer to have a variety of music that appeals to a broad audience,” says Sabrina van der Merwe, Wimpy Lydenburg Franchisee.

Wimpy franchisees no longer have to concern themselves about unwanted content sneaking into the music being played. Van Bosch explains, “The days of worrying about expletives, vulgar language or advertisements being played as part of your music selection is over. With our vetting process, we ensure that these are excluded. However, the franchisees do have the option to include their own promotional or announcement messaging if they so wish”.

“Each Wimpy Audio Solution system installed is tailored to the needs of that specific Wimpy franchisee, which means overcoming certain challenges such as occasionally using existing on-site equipment, as well as dealing with installation and connectivity issues in very remote parts of the country. However, our technical teams have overcome these challenges and the Wimpy franchisees have been very happy with the outcome,” says Chris Day, Managing Director at Moving Tactics.

Interest has been growing among Wimpy franchisees and, in just two months, eight Wimpy restaurants have had the system installed.

Retailing giant, Edgars has partnered with the leading South African digital signage solutions company, Moving Tactics SA, to install its in-store digital media solution at their new internationally branded store, Tom Tailor. This trendy German lifestyle and fashion brand has become a global hit and has opened its doors for the first time in South Africa.

Edgars, who has the exclusive South African franchise rights to the Tom Tailor brand, opened the store in the Sandton Shopping Centre last month. Tom Tailor is one of the fastest growing fashion houses in Europe and is known for its quality and trend-setting lines. Moving Tactics was selected to install a visual and audio digital signage system that would meet the high international standards expected by both Tom Tailor and the Edcon Group.

Sharon Dickinson, Edcon Group’s Head of Brands, says “We needed an in-store digital signage system that would meet Tom Tailor’s very high standards and would deliver on the need for the store staff and management to monitor their environment in South Africa. They wanted an interactive system that would enable users to have the necessary information and stats at their fingertips”.

Moving Tactics, who has the sole rights to the internationally acclaimed real-time visual communications software, X2O Media, has installed a full audio and visual system for Tom Tailor. Their innovative X2O Media platform has been used to operate the Muse Germany and Tom Tailor content and allows it to successfully integrate with the South African infrastructure.

“These X2O features are what enable the giant leap in interactivity and integration of information. Dynamic objects can be linked to data feeds like news, weather, traffic or financial information and will update automatically on any screen. This also applies to user-generated content from social media sites like Twitter, YouTube, Facebook and Instagram, and mobile interactivity to your network of digital displays is possible by dynamically displaying QR codes,” explains Chris Day, Managing Director of Moving Tactics.

“As we all know, content is king…and our X2O Media platform has the latest content management tools, which makes it easy to use, but more importantly saves our clients money and time.”

The importance of creating customer experiences in the retail environment is well-documented and is proving to influence consumer decision-making at the point of sale, as well as helping to enforce branding and enriching the overall shopping experience. Chris Day explains, “Today, more and more retailers are beginning to recognise and reap the benefits of using digital displays as part of their branding and customer shopping experience. It allows shoppers to visually interact with the brand’s products or promotions whilst still in the store environment, where actual purchasing decision can be made”.

Barco, a global leader in professional visualization systems, purchased Montreal-based enterprise communication specialist X2O Media, the full-service provider of software, network management services and content services for professional digital signage and corporate communication applications, in March 2014 and in so doing, expanded its technology platform with advanced connectivity capabilities.

X2O Media has been available in South Africa since July 2013, when Moving Tactics, the leading South African digital signage solutions company, secured the rights to resell the internationally acclaimed real-time visual communications software for the South African and Africa markets.

The X2O software platform, built on the power of HTML5, introduced an advanced level of digital capability never before available in South Africa. Chris Day, Managing Director of Moving Tactics explains, “X2O was and still is a game changer in the industry. The X2O platform can be used as either a cloud-based solution or be built into an enterprise environment, allowing any type of business to configure the platform for a multitude of uses, from corporate communications to retail digital signage to digital menu boards. This enables users to communicate key messages in real-time to target consumers via a range of digital devices, whether they are digital screens, interactive kiosks, tablets or smartphones – all from one solution.

Moving Tactics has become the largest cloud-based customer and reseller of X2O Media worldwide and has the most cloud-based licences registered internationally, due to its versatile and innovative use of the software. The company focuses on providing in-store digital signage, music and radio solutions for clients in the Retail (FMCG and Beauty & Cosmetics), Corporate Communications, Financial, and Quick-Service Restaurant industries and has most recently employed an X2O Media software solution within Clicks stores countrywide.

Clicks, the largest retail health and beauty-focused chain in South Africa, partnered with Moving Tactics to install digital signage in their Top 25 stores nationally. The in-store digital screens reach an audience of 2 million people per month and its strategic focus is on building an innovative media platform that will inform and benefit the shopping experience for its customers whilst enhancing the look and feel of its stores. X2O Media is being utilised to provide coherent and integrated product and service information to customers, as well as track their shopping habits, throughout their customer journey within the store.

The customer journey, and the supporting in-store digital signage, begins at the entrance to each store and wends its way through various retail departments, such as cosmetics, fragrance, and FMCG until it ends at the till points. Via the X2O Media software cloud, different apps, solutions and functions are employed throughout this journey to provide a seamless and versatile solution for the retailer:

  • a content management solution supports Clicks’ promotions strategy to provide customers with the latest on-point seasonal service and product promotions and provide a wide variety of suppliers, large and small, with an equal media voice in-store at point-of-purchase
  • a queue management app has been created and integrated into the digital screen technology to facilitate effective queue management and at the same time gather data on customer service wait times and teller operator effectiveness
  • due to X2O’s HTML5 capability, a Retail Analytics solution has been bolted on to the software to track customer behaviour and gather relevant data
  • Social media links, such as a Facebook, Twitter and News24, are linked to the digital screens at the till points to engage with clients
  • in-store mobile capability is linked to the cloud
  • media sales and retail reports can be generated from the information and data gathered.

The high-end technical capabilities of X2O and its adaptability to specific local and regional application environments make the software platform an easy choice says Kevin Bierman, Head of Digital Signage Solutions at Moving Tactics. “It is all about capability and functionality. Our X2O digital signage system works completely independently from Clicks’ IT and technical system, and it has access to many channels from a single server.

“We have built and developed X2O to meet our clients’ requirements. For example, for retailers it is especially important to be able to collect data, analyze such data and develop ways to increase your return-on-investment, which X2O allows. Another advantage is that it’s an end-to-end HTML5-based platform that enables X2O channels to be created and managed from one interface, saving users significant amounts of effort and costs in cross-publishing. The HTML5 technology also enables broadcast-quality graphics, video and dynamic content that immediately grab viewers’ attention,” explains Bierman.

In addition to working with clients in South Africa, Moving Tactics has installed digital signage and audio solutions using the X2O software platform in neighbouring countries such as Namibia, Botswana, Swaziland, Lesotho, Zambia, Angola and Tanzania, in mainly the Quick-Service Restaurant sector.

Sunglass Hut, the leading global sunglass retailer and part of the Luxottica retail group, has recently implemented a digital signage solution in 24 of its standalone stores in South Africa to enhance the effectiveness of its in-store promotions strategy.

Moving Tactics, South Africa’s leading digital signage solutions company, were employed to develop a unique installation to showcase in-store specials and promotions to passing customers.  The result being a custom designed and built digital screen housing to match the sleek and modern Sunglass Hut retail environment, which houses a 75-inch screen in portrait mode.

“Due to the layout and design of the Sunglass Hut stores, we could not install the screens onto the walls and had to come up with a more innovative solution. The freestanding digital screens and custom-designed housings have been positioned directly behind the store window front. It has been a winning solution and has garnered much attention from passing consumers and has mirrored the design elements of the Sunglass Hut Brand,” says Chris Day, Managing Director of Moving Tactics.

Ricardo Humphries, Senior Support Technician at Luxottica Retail, says, “Sunglass Hut was seeking a partner that could align itself with Samsung, as the global display partner for Sunglass Hut in South Africa, and who had the capability and foresight to integrate the display on the global network, as well as manufacture the bespoke digital screen housing and maintain the solution countrywide.  So, for us, Moving Tactics was a great choice and they were able to deliver the solution we needed based on the supplied timelines and unique delivery requirements”.

CLICKS ACCOUNT MANAGEMENT TEAM GROWS AT MOVING TACTICS

Moving Tactics, the leading South African Digital Signage solutions company, has once again boosted its account management team after its partnership agreement with Clicks whereby Moving Tactics installed digital signage within Clicks’ Top 25 stores nationally, and continues to market their media platform to Clicks’ private label suppliers and other leading brand suppliers. Danielle Lopes has joined Moving Tactics as National Network Manager for the Clicks account at their Cape Town office.

Having studied B.Comm Marketing, Danielle has throughout her career been involved in media and advertising and her love for people has always been prominent in her life. She started her first advertising sales job with Avenue Advertising working on "industrial" magazines for the mining and engineering fields.

Needing a new challenge, Danielle has joined Moving Tactics and says, “Although it is still the same industry I am very excited about working on out-of-home media as opposed to print, which will be a learning curve for me, and I am always up for a challenge. Moving tactics Touch screen table

Moving Tactics Digital Impact’s relationship with Mercedes Benz Fashion Week continues as they were once again called upon to design technology elements that expressed the on-going collaboration between the fashion industry and interactive technology for the 2015 Cape Fashion Week event, which recently took place at the V&A Waterfront.

As the leading South African digital signage solutions company, Moving Tactics Digital Impact’s team designed and manufactured a range of digital and interactive technology elements to create a dynamic interactive atmosphere between the guests and the event itself. Some of these branded technologies included:

- Two touch screen tables were placed in the VIP lounge, displaying specific Mercedes Benz Cape Town Fashion Week (MBCTFW) content

- A portable charging station for smartphones, which was integrated into the MBCTFW Media Lounge

- A Digital Illustration ‘booth’ where guests could have their portraits done via Wacom Tablet drawings. These were then displayed on the framed screen whilst being completed and finally printed out on-site for the guests to take home.

- A seamless 4 x 2.5m projection was displayed in the VIP Lounge
A 42-inch touch screen with bespoke manufactured housing and unique software was integrated into the Fast Track display area, providing guests with information about the designers, interviews with the design interns and videos playing Fast Track fashion content

- Two 32-inch Digital Displays with similarly designed bespoke housings were integrated into the Media Lounge, displaying MBCTFW content, as well as imitating the Fast Track content for guests.

The complexity and integrity of the software developed to drive these interactive technology elements was crucial in making sure that they spoke to one another and ran smoothly in union. Andy Higginbotham, Creative Director at Moving Tactics Digital Impact, says “We are very lucky to have Elan Davidson, our Technical Director, on hand who constructed and completed the software in-house”.

Moving Tactics Digital Impact is a new addition to the Moving Tactics stable and specialises in short-term, rental and campaign-based digital activation solutions. In addition to providing concept development and implementation using touch and projection technology, they also design and manufacture screen housings and bespoke items based on brief.

Pizza Hut switching to digital menu boards across new Southern Africa outlets

20150213_135522

Pizza Hut, the American fast-food chain that returned to South Africa in 2014 after an absence of six years, has rapidly been expanding since its first store opened in Johannesburg in September 2013, with a total of 21 stores currently operating.

In line with the look and feel of their international stores, Pizza Hut has partnered with Moving Tactics, the leading South African digital signage solutions company, to implement dynamic and innovative digital menu boards within their stores in Africa, which look good enough to eat.

Yum! Brands Inc (YUM)'s Managing Director of Pizza Hut in South Africa, Randall Blackford, says, "We needed to implement a digital menu board system that would meet the high standards of our international team, be priced competitively, and most importantly, would be flexible enough to work on the fly and meet the demands of our challenging roll-out schedule, with five stores being finalised in one month towards the end of last year".

Moving Tactics have used an X2O Media based-platform to power their digital menu board system. X2O Media is an end-to-end HTML5-based system, which is able to create and manage content from one channel to another. Chris Day, Managing Director at Moving Tactics, explains, "In the extremely fast-paced quick service restaurant industry, prices and product promotions constantly need to be changed and updated and our clients require effortless and effective content management system tools to make this happen. Our X2O Media menu board system enables the price of any item to be changed within minutes at all outlets or within a specific region, allowing restaurant chains to control product pricing at all stores, manage promotions more effectively and retain consistency and integrity with their customers".

Understanding the way in which digital menu boards are most effectively used is a science and Moving Tactics have used their content management expertise to maximise the efficacy of the boards as a marketing tool. "Content management and the flexibility to update content when, where and as quickly as is needed is key. Our content management team is dedicated to offering strategic advice to maximise sales conversions and display the information in an attractive and effective way. This is an on-going process, and with approximately 80 more Pizza Hut outlets due to open next year, we'll continue to drive innovation in this area," says Willem van Bosch, Solutions Development Manager at Moving Tactics.

The Pizza Hut digital menu boards have hit the road running and roll-out of the system is in progress. "The digital menu boards have been a total home run. Moving Tactics has truly added value with its expertise to our menu management and marketing within the four walls of our stores. I really appreciate all the personal attention and the team has been terrific to work with," adds Blackford.

Moving Tactics is the leading South African digital signage solutions company and has sole rights to the internationally acclaimed real-time visual communications software, X2O Media, within Africa. Moving Tactics develops customised digital signage technologies and is constantly creating innovative communication solutions.
