MT Dermalogica

Dermalogica opened its second concept store at the renowned V&A Waterfront in Cape Town in May, and most recently launched its third concept store at Rosebank Mall in Johannesburg.

Dermalogica's unique core concept comprises face mapping skin analysis; skin bar and micro-zone skin treatments which redefine the future of skin care through a branded experience.

To communicate this strong brand experience to customers and increase their product knowledge, Dermalogica employed Moving Tactics, the leading South African digital signage solutions company, to implement an in-store digital signage solution.

Willem van Bosch, Solutions Development Manager at Moving Tactics, says, "Digital displays were installed in the main retail front-of-house area of the store as well as in the treatment rooms, and we are using the X2O Media platform to manage the complete system, which includes all aspects of their content management".

"It is very important for us to create an exciting and memorable experience for our customers when they visit our concept stores, and we believe that using digital signage is the best way in which to educate our clients on the products and services available to them in-store. The screens will also be used to launch new products and promote treatments," says Claudia da Silva, Operations Manager at Dermalogica.

As South Africa's leading professional skincare brand, Dermalogica is dedicated to supporting and promoting skin health through the expertise of professional skin care therapists; and this expertise and most importantly, the client experience, is shared with customers via Dermalogica's live Twitter feed, which links directly with the in-store digital content in real-time. Their social media feeds are constantly updated with cutting-edge, relevant product and skin care information and is another effective way to communicate the brand essence.

"In addition to the social media content itself, social media analytics can also provide interesting information to viewers, which is why Moving Tactics is able to display this information in creative formats so that brands get an understanding of what is trending in real-time, and are able to respond timeously. We have been very enthusiastic about the Dermalogica brand and this integrated platform that provides information on product, services and promotions in-store, as well as the social proof from their customers via their social media channels," adds van Bosch.

Moving Tactics is the leading South African digital signage solutions company and has sole rights to the internationally acclaimed real-time visual communications software, X2O Media, within Africa. Moving Tactics develops customised digital signage technologies and is constantly creating innovative communication solutions.

Independent research proves retail digital TV is tops - Moving Tactics

The proof, it is said, is in the pudding.

Chris Day, MD of Moving Tactics, an alternative media company, has stated a number of times that "digital media advertising changes people's minds, in-store."  And now he has produced the pudding.  Last month Day commissioned independent consumer research company, Freshly Ground Insights (FGI), to interview shoppers as they left Picardi Rebel outlets.

The reason? To determine the efficacy of digital TV screens as an advertising medium.

The results not only reinforced the initial positive informal feedback but were even better than anticipated. 500 Shoppers in 10 stores were interviewed upon departure, the results were digitally recorded on site, photographs taken and feedback was available almost immediately.

"The results mirrored opinions at a recent marketing conference of brand marketers, retailers and ad agencies," says Day. "That retail marketing is at the top of the list when it comes to promotional tools and advertising displays."

The stores were carefully selected to incorporate a robust sample of consumer data - a cross section of shoppers across a selection of stores.  Each respondent was asked a number of questions around the use of audio in advertising, special offers and call to action as well as brand retention.

Animated Wall Projection for Klipdrift at the Fine Brandy Fusion festival

The Cape Town International Convention Centre played host to the annual Fine Brandy Fusion festival, South Africa’s premier brandy event, in May this year and featured the country’s leading brandies. The gala event was hosted by well known local MC, Proverb, and featured live performances by Deep House bands, such as Mi Casa.

Moving Tactics’ Digital Impact division was proud to partner with Distell to deliver a 10m2 custom tailored projection solution at their Klipdrift stand. The three-metre high projection on the outer wall of the stand’s Legend Lounge featured three independent pieces of animated artwork that ran in carefully looped sync display.

This same solution was also installed at the Johannesburg leg of Fine Brandy Fusion which took place at the Johannesburg International Convention Centre on 5 & 6 June. All the animated content was designed and produced by Digital Impact.

5 Secrets For Effective Visual Merchandising

The visual presentation in the store has always been the major customer motivation and accounts for the majority of retail purchase.

Your window display has the potential to attract the customer, reel them in and ultimately lead to purchase. However, there are a few key points every merchandiser should keep in mind.

1. Show less, Focus more
The human mind has a limited attention and focus span and therefore it is advisable to keep the display simple and uncluttered. Leave a lot of space around. The most common mistake is trying to show too much at the same time. Props should be simple in shape, preferably something that provides a large mass of color or texture, such as blocks, covered boxes or risers.

2. Love odd numbers
Always place an odd number of elements in a group. Since it's easier for the brain to zone in on the middle and the arrangement is slightly off balance, the eyes moves around to look at each frame or object. A perfectly balanced arrangement is even and therefore dull to the eye.

3. Repeat, repeat and repeat
Use variations of identical elements as that creates a very powerful display mechanism. It's a simple idea but can have a lot of impact on the mind of the consumer and it's hard to miss such a display.

4. Contrast is key
Make sure the items or frames you want to focus clearly contrast with the background. This includes color contrast as well as material texture contrast. For example, don't put a metal frame on top of a glossy background. Try making the background dull and repeated so that the frame that displays important information stands out.

5. Attract first, provide choice later: Pyramid method
Place one element at the top of the display which is clear and focused. Below that, in the form of a pyramid, place other elements which provide choice. It's hard to go wrong with a pyramid display.

6. BONUS: Always hire a good agency to execute your campaigns. An idea is only as good as it's execution. So while your presentation might look fabulous on your laptop, the real thing in the store must be as efficiently done.

"Good visual merchandising is a mix of art, inspiration and science. While great visual can sell lousy product, poor visuals can do nothing for great merchandise."
Paco Underhill, Why We Buy

Get comfortable with having some empty space in your high fashion displays. Crowding is a symbol of low value. So anything that is high value deserves a lot of space around it. If you keep an expensive item in a crowd the human brain perceives it to be of lower value.

Above all, use the K.I.S.S. theory of display: Keep It Simple, Sweetheart!

Moving Tactics Digital Impact, the leading South African digital signage solutions company, partnered with participating agencies Posterscope, Isobar and media owners, Ad Outpost, to deliver an innovative and creative animated projection experience at the recent adidas Originals Infinite Possibilities Block Party at AREA3 in Johannesburg’s Maboneng Precint.

Featuring a red-hot DJ line-up with more than 10 artists mixing it up on the decks, the iconic ZX Flux sneaker remained centre stage as media moguls, fashionistas and die hard sneaker fans braced themselves for an evening of edgy projections and visual stimulation to accompany the party vibe.

The striking 5 x 7 metre digitally animated displays projected onto outdoor billboards involved combining a print and digital creative where the various adidas Colourways were carefully projected over a printed graphic. Each of the Colourway transitions were beautifully blended together with customised animated video effects that were put together by the Moving Tactics’ motion graphics team.

Andy Higginbotham, Creative Director at Moving Tactics Digital Impact, says, “It was an amazing experience to partner with such creative and dynamic teams to produce an edgy, fun and technically inventive projection that really captured the feel and culture of the adidas brand”.

Moving Tactics introduces digital signage at the Keg chain of restaurants and pubs

MT The Keg

The Keg, a South African-based chain of restaurants and pubs, has deployed in-store digital signage powered by X2O Media throughout its network of restaurants. Working with Sauce Advertising, the Keg realised the need for a dynamic platform on which to direct product and promotions through to customers, and in early 2013, the company started collaborating with Moving Tactics, the leading South African digital signage solutions company, to make their vision a reality.

With a network of 16 traditional pub dining restaurants located across South Africa, the Keg has installed 42” LG displays in all their restaurants.  “What has made this digital media installation unique is that all the screens are designed in a portrait configuration that makes them stand out as you enter the restaurants. Most of the locations are equipped with three portrait displays and in some top-end locations, additional screens have been installed,” says Chris Day, Managing Director of Moving Tactics.

Moving Tactics is using the X2O Media platform to execute this roll-out and will be responsible for managing content assembly, system monitoring and remote maintenance on the displays.

Natasha McEwan, Social Media Accounts Executive at Sauce Advertising, says, “We produce the content for the Keg’s in-store digital screens, which focuses on local and national food and drink promotions, new menu items, upcoming events and sports fixtures as well as advertising.  It is crucial that content is updated on a regular basis and in real-time, as and when the Keg’s promotions and specials are introduced.

The screens deliver multiple messages that can be animated and day parted, as well as being restaurant-specific for local store marketing. It is proving to be an ideal platform for our partners to advertise products on in a dynamic way and thereby eliminates the need for a static poster”.

According to Carli O’Connor, Marketing Manager Emerging Brands & Pubs at Famous Brands, their main challenge was to secure the mindshare of their customers in the very active and competitive restaurant business.  She explains, “To accomplish this, we’ve had to create high-impact, broadcast-quality digital signage content, and ensure that it is delivered to the right target demographic at the right time of day.”

McEwan says that the digital screens have not only been effective but have also brightened up the stores.  “They bring an element of entertainment into the dining experience and they also give the appearance that the Keg brand is relevant and on-trend.”

“We look forward to growing with the Keg brand and installing additional screens as they expand their operations going forward,” adds Day.

Guests get ‘in touch’ with the Castle Lite brand at the Republic of Extra Cold Annual Event

Take a couple of local celebrities, mix in some hot DJ's and performers, and add a splash of state-of-the-art water projections and technology and you have a winning formula for a great party.  One of the biggest events to take place at the end of 2014 was Castle Lite’s ‘The Republic of Extra Cold’ VIP event held at Stanley Island in Plettenberg Bay.
Moving Tactics Digital Impact, the leading South African digital signage solutions company, was brought on board to partner with RK Events and Castle Lite to conceptualise and integrate digital elements into the party’s challenge categories. The following interactive digital activities were created for the invited guests to interact with:

Access Control – guests gained access to the event via the Passport Control element by which they had to place their hands on a glass touchpad Android tablet. Once their fingerprints were scanned, a welcome message appeared and they officially gained access.

Vital Statistics – to obtain partygoers’ vital statistics to determine if they were ‘Extra Cold’ enough to join the party, invited guests were asked to place their fingers on an on-screen ‘button’ for a brief period to have their temperature measured. If the reading came back as ‘EXTRA COLD’, they qualified to party. Two Android tablets were used for this activity.

Catch a Cold – the application encouraged guests to win points by catching the simulated snowflakes in a Castle Lite beer bucket or lose points for dropping them or catching ‘error’ icons. The gaming mechanics involved a simple left and right swiping of the finger on a glass surface onto which imagery had been projected.

Resolve to be Cold – two video booths were used to record guests’ individual video recorded resolutions. Guests were shown how to record their resolutions via interactive touch screens.

Collect-a-Case – another way that guests could win points was to take part in the Collect-a-Case activity in which they test their ability to stop scrolling at a specific time by having the scroller land on a case of Castle Lite.  Points were scored for correct strikes and lost for misses.

Andy Higginbotham, Creative Director at Moving Tactics Digital Impact, says, “It was fun to conceptualise ways in which the partygoers could use digital applications and touch screen technologies to interact with the brand itself.  It made it real to everyone there and kept the brand centre stage.  We were also involved with the water projections at the event, which overwhelmed the crowd with excitement”.

SAMSUNG CSC

For the second consecutive year, Moving Tactics’ Digital Impact division was contracted to design and execute unique interactive elements for the 2015 Mercedes Benz Fashion Week, hosted by African Fashion International. The event took in place in the Melrose Arch Piazza, Johannesburg from 5-7 March 2015.

As the leading South African digital signage solutions company, Moving Tactics Digital Impact’s team designed and manufactured a specialist DigiPod, equipped with a touchscreen interface as well as removable green-screen and directional sound technology.  Directional sound offers clients a wide range of functions which can be altered and directed in accordance with client’s specific requirements. This includes creating isolated sound zones on both horizontal and vertical axes.

Along with the Digipod, Moving Tactics also provided the hardware and installation services for the 2x2 HD Video Wall, as well as the designing and manufacturing a free-standing 42” LED Display with a custom housing.

Upon entering the venue, guests were directed to an upstairs area where the DigiPod was playing educational fashion-talk content. After this, they were escorted back downstairs to the VIP Marquee where the 42” Display was playing video content about the recently released Mercedes Benz CLS 63 AMG. To round off the experience, the 2x2 Video Wall allowed viewers to engage with high-resolution Mercedes Benz video content.

In addition to providing concept development and implementation using touch and projection technology, they also design and manufacture screen housings and bespoke items based on brief.
